General Candle Safety and Tips

1.                  Place candles on a protected, heat resistant surface, such as a trivet.  Hot jars and votive holders can damage furniture.

2.                  Ensure that the candle or warmer unit is on an even, level surface.  This will better promote even burning of your candle and help prevent wax spills.

3.                  Drafts, direct sun, or temperature extremes will greatly shorten the life of your candles and may cause soot.

4.                  Trim wick to 1/4 inch each time before lighting the candle.  Wicks that are too long can cause a high flame that may cause skin burns or burn nearby flammable material.

5.                  Remove all wick trimmings before lighting or trimmings may catch fire.

6.         Candle flame should never be more than 1 inch high.  If the flame reaches 3/4 inch - extinguish flame, trim to 1/8 inch, and re-light.

7.                  Keep candle away from flammable objects at all times while lit.

8.                  Do not move candle while lit.

9.                  Do not touch melted wax.

10.             Burn candles 1 hour for each inch of it’s diameter to allow the flame time to melt the wax to the outer edge.  Burning for less time will cause the candle to form a hole down the middle and shorten the burn time.

11.             Any candle scents containing cinnamon will produce a slight amount more of soot due to cinnamon’s higher burn temperature.

12.             If you blow out the candle flame, the resulting smoke can blacken the candle holder or wall, etc.

13.             Instead, put out a candle flame by using a candle snuffer.  Or push the lit wick into the melted wax pool with the flat side of a butter knife (non-sharp knife) until the flame goes out.

14.             After each dousing of the flame, re-align the wick in a straight, upright position while the wax is still soft.

15.      If remaining wax still has scent after candle has burned down to its lowest point, scrape wax out and place in a wax warmer.  Be sure to remove any wick and metal wick-holder pieces first.

16.             Wax spills of the candles featured on this web site can be cleaned up with soap and water!
